Icel. hv[ae]sa to hiss, Sw. hv["a]sa, Dan. hv[ae]se); akin to AS. hw?sta a cough, D. hoest, G. husten, OHG. huosto, Icel. h?sti, Lith. kosti to cough, Skr. k?s. [root]43. Cf.
