(b) The sagebrush. Meadow sage (Bot.), a blue-flowered species of Salvia (S. pratensis) growing in meadows in Europe. Sage cheese, cheese flavored with sage, and colored green by the juice of leaves of spinach and other plants which are added to the milk. Sage cock (Zo["o]l.), the male of the sage grouse; in a more general sense, the specific name of the sage grouse. Sage green, of a dull grayish green color, like the leaves of garden sage. Sage grouse (Zo["o]l.), a very large American grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus), native of the dry sagebrush plains of Western North America. Called also cock of the plains. The male is called sage cock, and the female sage hen. Sage hare, or Sage rabbit (Zo["o]l.), a species of hare (Lepus Nuttalli, or artemisia) which inhabits the arid regions of Western North America and lives among sagebrush. By recent writers it is considered to be merely a variety of the common cottontail, or wood rabbit. Sage hen (Zo["o]l.), the female of the sage grouse. Sage sparrow (Zo["o]l.), a small sparrow (Amphispiza Belli, var. Nevadensis) which inhabits the dry plains of the Rocky Mountain region, living among sagebrush. Sage thrasher (Zo["o]l.), a singing bird (Oroscoptes montanus) which inhabits the sagebrush plains of Western North America. Sage willow (Bot.), a species of willow (Salix tristis) forming a low bush with nearly sessile grayish green leaves.

Any one of numerous species of the genus Pica and related genera, allied to the jays, but having a long graduated tail. Note: The common European magpie (Pica pica, or P. caudata) is a black and white noisy and mischievous bird. It can be taught to speak. The American magpie (P. Hudsonica) is very similar. The yellow-belled magpie (P. Nuttalli) inhabits California. The blue magpie (Cyanopolius Cooki) inhabits Spain. Other allied species are found in Asia. The Tasmanian and Australian magpies are crow shrikes, as the white magpie (Gymnorhina organicum), the black magpie (Strepera fuliginosa), and the Australian magpie (Cracticus picatus). Magpie lark (Zo["o]l.), a common Australian bird (Grallina picata), conspicuously marked with black and white; -- called also little magpie. Magpie moth (Zo["o]l.), a black and white European geometrid moth (Abraxas grossulariata); the harlequin moth. Its larva feeds on currant and gooseberry bushes.

They have large, flattish heads, short ears, and webbed toes. They are aquatic, and feed on fish. Their fur is soft and valuable. The common otter of Europe is Lutra vulgaris; the American otter is L. Canadensis; other species inhabit South America and Asia. 2. (Zo["o]l.) The larva of the ghost moth. It is very injurious to hop vines. Otter hound, Otter dog (Zo["o]l.), a small breed of hounds, used in England for hunting otters. Otter sheep. See Ancon sheep, under Ancon. Otter shell (Zo["o]l.), very large bivalve mollusk (Schizoth[ae]rus Nuttallii) found on the northwest coast of America. It is excellent food, and is extensively used by the Indians. Sea otter.
