aromatic plant (Gr. ???, cf. Ar. kost, kust) + Maria Mary.

A garden plant (Chrysanthemum Balsamita) having a strong
balsamic smell, and nearly allied to tansy. It is used as a
pot herb and salad plant and in flavoring ale and beer.
Called also alecost.
