Velvetleaf Vel"vet*leaf`, n. (Bot.) A name given to several plants which have soft, velvety leaves, as the Abutilon Avicenn[ae], the Cissampelos Pareira, and the Lavatera arborea, and even the common mullein.

The seeds also send down a strong root while yet attached to the parent plant. Note: The fruit has a ruddy brown shell, and a delicate white pulp which is sweet and eatable. The bark is astringent, and is used for tanning leather. The black and the white mangrove (Avicennia nitida and A. tomentosa) have much the same habit. 2. (Zo["o]l.) The mango fish.

It is caused by a parasitic fungus, Claviceps purpurea. 2. The mycelium or spawn of this fungus infecting grains of rye and wheat. It is a powerful remedial agent, and also a dangerous poison, and is used as a means of hastening childbirth, and to arrest bleeding. 3. (Far.) A stub, like soft horn, about the size of a chestnut, situated behind and below the pastern joint. 4. (Anat.) See 2d Calcar, 3 (b) .
